Luke Elliot to perform at Vaudeville Mews on Oct. 15

Singer/songwriter Luke Elliot will bring his unique musical flair to Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines on Oct. 15 for a 9:30 p.m. performance. Listen, Iowa, this is one you won’t want to miss.

Elliot, whose genre-bending style mixes throwback crooning with equal shades of Americana and Nick Cave/Bob Dylan-like story-telling abilities, is touring in support of his debut full-length album, “Dressed for the Occasion,” which was released this summer and was produced by John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.).

Elliot has been honing his storytelling abilities since his early childhood when he began writing stories and poems that drew the attention of his parents and instructors alike — and not in a good way.

“I made up a story about a kid looking through a lock in a door and seeing his dad having an affair on his mom, and then he went and killed the woman. I was in third grade. They called my parents in for that one,” he said in a recent interview with The Music.com.

Elliot’s penchant for storytelling and fascination with topics a bit out-of-the norm is front-and-center on “Dressed for the Occasion.”

“I don’t know where the stories come from sometimes,” explains Elliot. “They just come. I like creating characters or telling someone else’s story, but sometimes I write about what I’m going through. It generally starts with a sound that I’ll have on the piano or guitar or something. And then I just kind of fumble things for days until I get an idea of the story that I want to tell. The mood of the song will sometimes lead you into what it’s about.”\
