Des Moines Symphony to perform the score for the 40th anniversary celebration of “The Goonies”

THE ORCHESTRA BRINGS DAVE GRUSIN’S ICONIC SCORE TO LIFE WHILE THE GOONIES PLAYS ON A GIANT SCREEN

Audiences will release their inner pirate and join Mikey, Chunk, Mouth, Data, and the beloved kids from the “Goon Docks” as they embark on their epic hunt for One-Eyed Willy’s treasure.

The Goonies is celebrating its 40th Anniversary in 2025, and the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra will bring Dave Grusin’s iconic score to life while the movie plays on the big screen.

John Beal, who will conduct the Des Moines Symphony for The Goonies, reflected on what it means to bring these scores into the concert hall.

This is almost a completely different art form,” he said. “Where a symphony has freedom to interpret tempo and emotion, here we’re trying to exactly recreate what was recorded when the film score was made. I have to chase what the conductor did years ago, and the orchestra has to replicate the dynamics note-for-note.We have a hundred-year history of music accompanying film, from piano to big theater organs to full orchestras. For many, this is the first time they’ve ever heard a live orchestra. After concerts, people come to me with tears in their eyes, or children tell me they’ve found the one thing they want to explore in their lives. There’s truly no experience like it.”

Single tickets range from $31.40-$76.20 and are available online at dmsymphony.org (up until two hours prior to performances) and at the Civic Center Ticket Office, 221 Walnut Street, Des Moines, from  10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and two hours prior to performances.
